The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region Highway Design Section is recruiting for a Drafting Technician III position located in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

The Drafting Technician hired for this position shall perform the following duties:
  • Works with design and engineering staff to prepare and modify engineering plans, exhibits, maps, and other related drawings for highway Capital Improvement Projects in southcentral Alaska.
  • Take instruction from engineers and designers, and draft construction plan sheets, plan and profile sheets, typical section sheets, detail sheets, and other sheets as necessary to produce clear, understandable and quality drawings using AutoCAD Civil3D software.
  • Utilizes as-builts, surveys, photos, sketches, maps and other information or data.
  • This position also supports other sections within the department on an as needed basis.
  • This position will require learning additional programs on occasion to meet the needs of the department as technology changes.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Our ideal candidate for this position would have the following desired strengths:
  • Advanced experience using Autodesk Civil 3D to prepare civil engineering plans and exhibits; roadway experience is desired;
  • Experience reading, reviewing, and interpreting information from design sketches, existing drawings, maps, and schematics and incorporating these elements into new AutoCAD drawings and graphics;
  • Experience with as-builts and record drawings;
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook;
  • Experience using Geographic Information System (GIS);
  • Working knowledge of engineering drafting standards, methods, and procedures;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a design team.
  • Willingness to learn, push technical limits, and find new solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of two courses in computer assisted drafting, design or mechanical drawing at the high school level, OR 6 semester hours or 8 quarter hours of computer assisted drafting, design, or mechanical drawing course work at the technical/vocational school or college level;
One year of automated drafting experience as a Drafting Technician II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Additional experience in computer assisted drafting, design, or mechanical drawing may be substituted for the required course work on a year-for-year basis.
