Principal Fire Protection Engineer-ENG00114
This position provides project leadership and/or discipline support for Fire and Gas Business Unit projects by researching, specifying, developing, designing, engineering or testing of fire and gas protective (detection, signaling, notification, mitigation, suppression, and passive protective) systems. Individuals are expected to apply advanced knowledge of engineering principles, methods and techniques to project assignments.
? Researches and analyzes data such as client design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
? Works with clients to develop a project’s scope of work, estimates, and/or schedules
? Reviews and approves project drawings, standards and specifications
? Develops major equipment, material selection, and construction specifications.
? Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
? Directs and coordinates construction, installation, fabrication and/or operational testing activities to ensure services, products and/or systems conform to engineering design and client criteria.
? Ensures that all assigned activities and operations comply with applicable codes, regulations and laws
? Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications
? Coordinates activities with other project disciplines involved in fabrication, operation, application, and installation or repair of various materials, products or systems
? Provides technical direction, support and information to other specialists, engineers, designers and drafters.
? Consistently demonstrates professional skills in structuring assigned activities, creativity, teamwork, communications, operational efficiencies, handling of a client’s changing needs, decision making, and analyzing and solving problems

Accredited Masters or Doctorate degree in Fire Protection Engineering with 5 years fire protection engineering experience, or
Accredited Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering with 7 years fire protection engineering experience, or
Accredited Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology with 10 years fire protection engineering experience, or
Accredited Masters or Bachelors degree in Civil, Chemical, Control Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering, or closely related discipline with 10 years fire protection engineering experience.
Alaska P.E. or Alberta PEng licenses are strongly preferred. Candidates must meet the minimum regulatory education and experience criteria for both of these licenses to be considered for this position.
1. Fire Protection Engineering experience as described in "Required Education/Training".
2. Responsible engineering charge of fire protection engineering for at least one major industrial (petroleum production, processing, storage, or transport; nuclear or thermal electrical power plant; paper or chemical process plant; or similar) project from hazard analysis through final commissioning.
3. Advanced knowledge and experience in at least two of our core competency areas in fire and gas engineering – fire and gas detection, signaling, and control systems; audible and visible notification; gas modeling and gas mitigation systems, fire control and suppression systems, passive fire protection systems; and life-safety egress analysis and site planning studies.
4. Ability to successfully delegate tasks must be demonstrated by experience with several recent projects.
1. Arctic or Cold Regions projects engineering experience
2. Offshore platform fire protection experience
3. Preparation and presentation of peer-reviewed article in fire protection engineering publications, or and fire protection engineering conferences
4. Performance-based design of audible and visible notification compliant with NFPA 72 and other standards
5. Experience with fire protection of living quarters and camps
6. Experience working as part of project teams performing work in multiple locations (buildings, cities, or countries).
1. Read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
2. Compose and coordinate complex reports and correspondence.
3. Respond to complex inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
4. The language of the Fire and Gas Business Unit is English, but additional competency in Arabic, Danish, French, Norwegian, or Russian is a plus.
Math skills sufficient to:
1. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
2. Compute rate, ratio, and percent.
3. Draw and interpret bar graphs
4. Perform and review complex calculations utilizing statistics and calculus at a level normally attained by engineering graduates is required.
5. Knowledge of perturbation theory and the ability to apply to calculations is preferred, but not required.
1. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited or no standardization exists.
2. Interpret an extensive variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
1. Ability to operate a keyboard and calculator.
2. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Word Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
3. Proficiency in any of the following is preferred; in, as is
a. MS Access
b. Use of fire and smoke modeling software
c. Use of sprinkler hydraulic modeling software
d. Use of Special Hazard gaseous suppression software
e. Use of Special Hazard Water Mist suppression hardware
f. Use of gas dispersion and thermal hazard software
g. Use of modeling software for performance-based design of audible and visible notification compliant with NFPA 72 and other standards
h. Use of egress modeling software
i. Computer modeling of temperature rise in steel and concrete structural members with and without passive fire protection.
Certificates and Licenses:
P.E., P. Eng., or Chartered Engineer designation. Alaska P.E. or Alberta PEng licenses are strongly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate that they meet the minimum regulatory education and experience criteria for both of these licenses to be considered for this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to visit Oil and Gas production facilities in Cook Inlet, Alaska; on the North Slope of Alaska; in northern Alberta Canada; or (less frequently) other locations in the US or worldwide. . The position requires a person that is able to travel and work in a remote location overnight or longer. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and adverse outdoors weather conditions. The employee is expected to abide by all required safety regulations, behaviors and conditions, as required at the local or remote work locations. The noise level in the production environment may be high in the Process Areas and requires Hearing Protection. The regular work location in Anchorage is a typical business office setting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally exposed to severe outside weather conditions and perhaps the risk of electrical shock. The noise level is usually quiet.
Some company locations and projects require the employee to travel to remote industrial facilities which will require the employee to fly in aircraft of various sizes and visit the production facilities where excessive noise, heat and cold temperature will be experienced. The ability to climb ladders, stairs and traverse industrial platforms in the performance of the specialist’s duties will be required.
